EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

It is my philosophy that education is something that should be available to everyone. It is my mission to see that all students get the access to the education that they need and that they deserve. Education is the door to a better future; be it career or trade, education is what guarantees success.

My journey in education started when I was given the opportunity to attend a private high school in Vermont. Had it not been for the education that I received there and the fellow classmates that I met, my interest in education and desire to pursue it would never have blossomed. It is through Vermont Academy that my interest in pursuing education as a teacher started and then continued into my undergraduate studies at Elmira College.

Elmira nourished my pursuit to become an educator and introduced me to ESL tutoring. Helping international students with their English writing, speaking, and reading was an amazing experience that opened up a whole new world for me. Through my tutoring I got to meet all sorts of students from all sorts of different backgrounds that taught me that education is a universal language, everyone wants to know about what they are doing. This got me to move abroad to South Korea where I worked on honing my teaching skills and started to get into the idea of working with students in helping them figure out their plans.

This carried over when I moved to China and continued to work as an ESL instructor, adding on the personal touch of initial discussions to help students understand what their education was doing for them. This caught the eyes of the school, and I was brought in for training to be an Academic Advisor. In that role I was in charge of overseeing high school freshmen, getting them started in their pathways and sophomores, helping them continue and start to choose their specific classes. Throughout, I had to have meetings or one-on-ones to remind and reinforce that what they were doing was worth their time, even if it did not seem like it at the time.

Moving back to the states in 2019, I worked with Fort Drum’s education center where I helped active-duty soldiers ready themselves for college and transition into civilian life. This is what prompted me to pursue my Master in Higher Education, as I want to continue helping students, of any and all backgrounds, find the right educational path that will get them towards their goals.
